Facts & Flows

Water accounting and trading, reimagined.

Deployed

Facts & Flows is the shared facts layer for water accounting. It brings water rights, allocations, available water and recorded use into one record, so regulators, operators and water users work from the same numbers within their access permissions. Transfers, sharing, exchange and trading all happen against these shared facts and are recorded in the same place. Facts & Flows runs on Water Ledger infrastructure and is live with Seqwater in Australia.

Questions about working with us
What do we need to bring a water scheme into Facts & Flows?

Facts & Flows follows Claim, Use, Comply. Start with the holder’s claim, scheme rules and entitlement records; connect allocations and recorded use with their sources and dates; then retain account history for statements, reporting and review. Source systems, periods, units and access requirements are scoped with the scheme operator. The relevant authority determines compliance; Facts & Flows supplies the connected record.

Discuss your water scheme
What is the difference between an entitlement, an allocation and recorded use?

An entitlement describes a water right under a scheme. An allocation describes water made available under the rules for a period. In this public ledger, Recorded use is the current extraction-account balance from the source system. It is not a total of consumption during the selected accounting period. Read each measure with its source, scheme rules, units and dates.

What do plan, management area and zone mean in Facts & Flows?

These levels organise the water system by place, from the widest context to the most specific. A plan sets the overall framework for a region: the rules, limits and objectives for sharing water. A management area is a defined part of that region managed as a unit, such as a catchment, aquifer or river system. A zone is a smaller subdivision within a management area where particular rules, limits or accounting apply. Each level can describe a supply area, where water comes from and is made available, or a demand area, where water is allocated, delivered and used. They may not follow the same boundaries, so a single supply area can serve several demand areas and the other way round. Select a level to explore its records, then check the water source, priority class and reporting period when comparing figures.

How is available water calculated?

A customer’s available water depends on scheme rules, allocations, transfers and carryover where applicable. This public ledger shows Remaining scheme volume as configured scheme volume minus recorded use. It does not provide a customer’s available entitlement or calculate a remaining balance for an individual zone or water class.

Can I trade water directly from the public Facts & Flowsview?

The public Facts & Flows view helps people explore water accounts. Transaction access, eligible participants and trading rules depend on the implementation and the water scheme. A public record or displayed balance is not itself an offer to trade or confirmation of transaction eligibility.
