Seqwater / Queensland, Australia

One shared ledger. Clear water accounts.

The challenge

Seqwater manages allocation accounts for around 1,200 irrigators across seven schemes. The accounts lived in spreadsheets, so customers had to ask for a balance, a single enquiry could take up to 30 minutes, and quarterly statements arrived up to four weeks after quarter end.

The work

In 2021, Seqwater’s Irrigation Team, its Innovation Program and WaterStart put out a request for proposals, which led to a partnership with Water Ledger Global. A pilot ran from 2022 to 2025 in the Central Lockyer scheme, recording allocation, carryover, usage and trade events on a shared ledger. Seqwater now runs its water accounts for the Central and Lower Lockyer schemes on that infrastructure.

The result

Seqwater and Water Ledger Global compared baseline measures with pilot outcomes. Initial results: balance enquiries fell from up to 30 minutes to under two, and quarterly statements from about four weeks after quarter end to under three days. Seqwater is implementing a staged rollout across its irrigation schemes.
